Squamish RCMP are urging caution after two incidents of fraudsters targeting locals.
On October 6, a fraudster posed as the president of a company and asked the local employee to purchase $2,800 worth of gift cards.
The employee later learned they were victim of a fraud when the actual president confirmed they did not make any such request.
“Be cautious of any calls where payment or purchase of gift cards is requested. For information on recent scams or reporting, please check the Canadian anti-fraud website,” said Sgt. Sascha Banks of Squamish RCMP.
On October 12, Squamish RCMP investigated a complaint of email scam where a local man was contacted about a stolen bike.
The local was told their stolen bike was in Banff and would be returned if the local could e-transfer the money first.
Sgt. Banks is reminding residents to take caution when giving out any sort of personal information.
A few weeks ago, Squamish RCMP issued a public warning after a local citizen fell victim to CRA and text message scams.
The complainant had been coerced into providing their social insurance number by scammers.
The scammers were skilled and highly manipulative, making it easy for people to fall prey, said Sgt. Banks.
