Four gondola cabins installed; late spring opening eyed

Staff report
February 24, 2021 11:14am

Four gondola cabins have been installed over a new rope cable as the Sea to Sky Gondola prepares to open late spring or early summer.

“The start of 2021 has been a busy one for our Operations Team with work taking place on the lift and at the summit,” the company said in an update.

The new cable arrived and was installed, while new cabins have left the manufacturing facilities in Switzerland on their journey to Squamish.

Meanwhile, new decking was installed throughout the Summit Station.

With the new cable in place, the team installed four gondola cabins onto the lift.

“Over the course of the next few months, you will see these cabins on the line as we move staff to and from the summit and get ready for reopening in late spring,” it said.

Last month, it announced it had completed the cleanup process and had placed orders for 25 new gondola cabins.

The rebuild also included additional security measures that are extraordinary in the lift industry, it said.

“We will not be disclosing details of our security system; however, our goal is to provide an enjoyable yet incredibly safe experience for everyone,” the company said.

Meanwhile, the RCMP investigation in the gondola vandalism is ongoing.

Anyone who has information on this investigation can contact the Police Gondola Information phone line: 604-892-6122 or email: GONDOLA.INFO@rcmp-grc.gc.ca .
