Hotel proposed at Oceanfront Squamish

March 9, 2021 12:40pm

Oceanfront Squamish is proposing a new hotel on oceanfront, though there is no timeline yet.

The hotel is expected to be placed in the Village Centre, which will have pubs and patios, shops and boutiques, arts facilities, entertainment and dining combined in clusters to create a blend of village neighborhoods.

This blend of village neighborhoods will eventually connect to a marina along the edge.

In a report to council, district staff notes that the maximum height the hotel can have is 20 metre or six storeys.

The staff proposes to allow a seven-metre height bonus if the developer builds with mass timber and provides commercial space on ground floor.

However, there will be no increase in number of storeys.

The additional height for using timber is a possibility across the entire development, as it allows for the additional build-up required by post-and-beam construction, according to Carlos Zavarce, director of development for Oceanfront Squamish.

“This construction type has the benefit of enhancing the net-sequestered carbon on the site as we work towards building a net-zero development,” he said.

Zavarce also said the entire oceanfront site would feature ample street-level parking as well as parking for commercial businesses within underground parkades.

“We are not proposing a reduction to on-street parking, in fact, we see ample on-street parking as a critical component of the entire oceanfront site,” he said.

Zavarce added that the “parking reduction” as proposed within the housekeeping amendment allowed for on-street parking to be recognized in the parking count numbers.

Oceanfront Squamish, he said, was also working with the district on creating a balance between space for vehicles and wide sidewalks and bike lanes to make the development a vibrant, walkable community.

The council will be discussing the development today.
