The District of Squamish is inviting fuel treatment proposal to reduce hazardous fuels and fire behaviour adjacent to the community.
One or more contracts will be awarded for this work.
The proposed treatments involves hazard-tree removal, thinning from below, pruning, brushing, surface fuel reduction and debris disposal, including pile burning, chipping, and/or hauling.
A total of 14.1 hectare in two separate area have been identified.
“The purpose of this fuel treatment is to reduce both surface and crown fuel loads in a manner that reduces fire hazard and fire behavior potential,” the district says.
The fuel thinning targets two areas: Swift Creek and Squamish Airport.
In Swift Creek, the location will be the east side of the Highway 99 at the intersection with Swift Creek FSR, and forested areas between the Highway and BC Hydro right-of-way.
The other area is around the local airport, on the west side of Government Road, and the forested areas between the road and Squamish airport.
The work may also involve wildlife and danger-tree assessment to identify and retain high-value wildlife trees.
