The Squamish Public Library has launched a new Visiting Library Service and volunteer program.
As an extension of the Library’s Take-Out service that has grown out of the pandemic, the Library will launch a new Visiting Library Service to homebound Elders and seniors in the community, with the help of trained volunteers.
Homebound seniors and Elders may register for this new service by contacting the library or on the library’s website: www.squamishlibrary.ca/visiting-library-service
Once registered, patrons will be contacted by a volunteer over the phone to discuss their needs and interests.
Volunteers will select materials on behalf of, or in collaboration with patrons and will pick up materials from the Library, and then deliver to homebound patrons on a monthly basis in a safe manner.
A pilot program has been running since early March with several volunteers.
“We are so grateful for the feedback and support from Sea to Sky Hospice Society, Hilltop House, Better at Home and the Squamish Elders Program, and inspired by the support and community interest during our initial conversations with many in our community,” said the Library’s Project Coordinator Diana Gunstone.
The Library aims to launch what will become an ongoing sustainable service and volunteer program to better connect and include isolated and homebound residents in our community – as well as providing new community volunteer service opportunities.
The Library is considering the possibility of offering this service to all ages of homebound residents in the future.

The ALTRUSA CLUB of NANAIMO has been doing this for decades and the response from our clients is phenomenal. It has proven to be one of our best projects and so well received and appreciated. I wish Squamish all the best in this worthwhile project.
