Last week, 11 Squamish Rotary Club members picked up over 100 kgs of litter and garbage in various areas of the community.

The clean-up was part of Pitch-In Week, a nation-wide environmental improvement initiative.

Rotarian Brian Finley said the group worked at the busy downtown areas and vacant lots, specifically along the along the Bailey Street area and tracks behind the Chieftain Centre at Save-On Foods.

The group also picked up garbage along Loggers Lane between Hunter Place and Pemberton Ave., and around the Yacht Club, along Loggers Lane between Vancouver and Main Streets.

Finley says the local club has actively participated in the Pitch-in week event since it started and plans to continue to do so.

The project was sponsored by the District of Squamish, who provided gloves, garbage bags and a tipping fee waiver for the Squamish Landfill.

Supporting the environment was recently adopted as Rotary’s seventh area of focus, which are categories of service activities supported by global grants.

“Rotary International is committed to supporting activities that strengthen the conservation and protection of natural resources, advance ecological sustainability, and foster harmony between communities and the environment.”
