District to install slacklining posts in downtown park

Staff report
May 20, 2021 10:47am

District of Squamish plans to install slacklining posts at a downtown park in the near future.

In a response to a citizen, Gary Buxton, the General Manager of Community Planning & Infrastructure, said the district was going to source and reinstall some posts for slacklining in Xwu’ nekw Park in the near future.

“We have to source the lumber (currently in short supply like many other things) and then install them,” he said.

“I don’t have a timeline at present but we will get on this right away,” he added.

Buxton was responding to a letter from a citizen, who said the sport partially developed in town as a pastime for climbers.

“Previously, we had two unofficial public slackline parks, Nexen beach, and Xwu’nekw Park downtown, and an annual Slacklining festival known as HevyFest was held in Squamish for half a decade,” the local wrote.

Buxton said that the district was planning dike construction work in September at the park, and may have to remove the slackline for some time, but they would be installed by the summer.
