Firefighters extinguish abandoned campfire in estuary

Staff report
June 1, 2021 12:12pm

Squamish Fire Rescue attended two fire-related incidents on Sunday afternoon, including one in the estuary.

At approximately 5:05 p.m., Squamish Fire Rescue crews were dispatched to extinguish an abandoned campfire in the area of Third Ave and Westminster Street in the Estuary.

No one was injured in this fire.

Earlier in the day, around 3:20 pm, Squamish Fire Rescue crews were called to a brush fire located in the 39000 block of Discovery Way between Highway 99 and Discovery Way.

The campfire was roughly 20′ x 20′ in size when fire crews extinguished it.

No injuries were reported in this incident.

Squamish Fire Rescue is urging the public to call 9-1-1 immediately if they see smoke and suspect an unpermitted campfire.

Campfires or open burning are not permitted on public lands within the District of Squamish boundaries.

Campfires are only allowed on private residential property or at commercial campgrounds with a campfire permit, subject to conditions.

Fires are not allowed but they still seem to pop up because of negligence of the starter … the rule should be three strikes and you are out …. lets not pussy foot around, get the message out to the idiots … this could become a bad fire year and if we can “define” the “idiots” early maybe will save the DOS some fire fighting costs … we do not need specific fire fighting techniques, we need water on the scene quickly. This is very important to all the land owners in Squamish, the folks that pay the bills. Lets not become a benevolent group and allow these “rights people” one foot of respectable slack. Hit them high and hit them hard …. and they may get the message … “‘you are not welcome to do your own thing without showing respect for others.”
