The yearling black bear that was frequenting the Valleycliffe neighbourhood has been captured and relocated on Saturday, May 29.
According to the district, this was an early intervention measure by the Conservation Officer Service (COS) to try and give the bear the best chance at staying wild and away from human food sources.
Yesterday, the District of Squamish and COS also issued a warning about an aggressive bear along the dog pound dike.
The bear has charged at people in the area, the district says.
The warning was issued following multiple reports of close encounters with a large bear travelling along the dog pound dike.
The public is being asked to avoid the area, and signage will be posted to alert the public to use extra caution and to keep dogs on leash at all times.
The district is urging locals to take time to assess their property, and to lock and secure totes, only put totes out for collection on the morning of collection day and never the night before, to freeze odourous food items and place them in the tote on the morning of collection.
People are also being urged to remove birdfeeders or ensure they are 10 feet off the ground with a seed catch tray, and to rinse all recycling.
If your tote is broken or damaged please contact GFL for a free repair or replacement by calling 604.892.5604 or emailing squamishtotes@gflenv.com.
