Aggressive bear closes trail and campsite in Garibaldi Provincial Park

Staff report
June 8, 2021 3:53pm

A public safety notice has been issued for Garibaldi Provincial Park. BC Parks has closed the Cheakamus Lake Campground in Garibaldi Provincial Park due to the presence of an aggressive bear.

The the closure was implemented today.

“Due to a number of incidences with an aggressive food-conditioned bear, Cheakamus Lake Trail and campsite are closed until June 22. Please remember it is everyone’s responsibility to store food and essentials appropriately in the backcountry. Do not be the reason why a bear is destroyed,” BC Parks said.

It will be in effect until at least June 22.

BC Parks is urging everyone to clean up after enjoying the parks.

“Litter attracts wildlife and increases wildlife-human conflict. Leaving trash in bear caches and bear hangs can damage these facilities and prevent others from using them.”
