Mother bear euthanized after accident on Highway 1 in West Van

The North Shore Black Bear Society is asking public in West Vancouver to look for two orphaned cubs after their mother was severely injured by a vehicle on Highway 1 and had to be euthanized.

In an update, the society said a female bear was severely injured by a vehicle on Highway 1, at Exit 4 in Caulfeild in West Vancouver.

She was euthanized by Conservation Officers. It appears she was producing milk for at least one cub who has not been located.

Please do not approach or intervene but call the Conservation Officer Service and then the black bear society immediately if you observe or locate them.

COS must be called in order for these cubs to be transferred to Critter Care.

A mother bear was killed by Conservation Officers on Gisby Street in West Vancouver at least two days ago for entering a home. She has at least one cub who is yet to be located.

“Please be alert for these very vulnerable cubs who will not survive without intervention. You must call the BC Conservation Officer Service if you see these cubs. Do not attempt to trap or corner them yourselves,” the society said.

“Please also make the North Shore Black Bear Society aware so we can make efforts to ensure the cubs’ safe transfer to Critter Care, where they will be rehabilitated.”
