The District is seeking to make improvements to active transportation infrastructure in the Garibaldi Highlands neighbourhood, specifically in the area of Pitlochry Way and Pia Road.
It plans to install a new zebra crosswalk with side-mounted signs in the neighbourhood, and construct of a new concrete sidewalk with ramp.
This will include tactile warning pads, removal of existing trees, and installation of permanent pavement markings.
The district has a bid out for these proposals.
This spring, the district had also identified Highlands Way North as a top priority for traffic calming and active transportation based on factors such as traffic volumes, speeds and proximity to nearby amenities such as schools.
District traffic control revealed that Highlands Way North saw close to 2,000 vehicles each day, with Perth Drive logging a daily count of approximately 1,300 vehicles.
These counts were conducted before the district installed the current 30 km/hr school zones on The Boulevard and Perth Drive.
“The District of Squamish road network was originally built with the automobile in mind, and efforts are being made across the community to retrofit these roads to match a modern, active community of the 21st century,” the district says.

I’m not sure how many Zebra’s are residents of Squamish but to give them their own crosswalk?? I think council needs a reality check! lol

Bike lanes are good but I hope they design them with ebikes in mind and not the slow speeds of traditional bikes…
