The municipal road formerly known as Squaw Valley Crescent has been renamed Chamonix Crescent, effective Thursday, September 30.
RMOW is asking Whistler community members to update their contact information.
The word “squaw” is considered by many to be a derogatory and offensive ethnic and sexist term and does not represent Whistler’s valued relationships with local First Nations communities, RMOW said.
In July 2020, Council directed staff to develop an engagement and naming process for renaming the road and Council voted to change the name to Chamonix Crescent earlier this year.
The roads in Whistler Creekside follow a naming convention based on cities that have hosted the Winter Olympic Games.
As such, Squaw Valley Crescent was named after the Squaw Valley Ski Resort that hosted the 1960 Olympic Winter Games.
In accordance with the RMOW’s Road Naming Procedure, property owners residing on Squaw Valley Crescent were surveyed with three prospective road names to choose from.
Chamonix Crescent received the most positive responses.
