Brennan Park renovations to cost $16.3 million

District of Squamish has applied for federal grant to fund several improvements to the Brennan Park Recreation Centre (BPRC).

The improvements will cost $16.3 million.

These proposed improvements to the BPRC include a new 4,000 square feet customer service area, lobby renovation, mezzanine, ice rink change rooms and roof insulation.

The District also plans to improve the ice rink change rooms and upgrade the ice rink and pool heat recovery system.

A new elevator and exterior lighting and landscaping are also being planned.

The proposed improvements would reduce greenhouse gas emissions and reduce operating costs at the recreation centre, while improving customer service and accessibility, the District says.

The District has submitted a grant application to obtain $11.8 million from Ottawa.

If the grant application is successful, the remaining $4.5 million will be funded by the District reserves and land sales.

This is the first phase of BPRC improvements,

Future expansion plans include a new rink, new pool, wellness centre and administration building which would almost double the existing floor area.

District is also planning to lease municipal hall rather than build and own a new municipal hall.

One might ask about the role that the corporate and business community can play in contributing to amenities that enhance the recreational, cultural and social lives of our citizens. Having excellent facilities must certainly be a draw to entice and maintain employees into the community. Taxes and government grants are one way to build capacity but inviting contributions from the corporate sector should not be overlooked.

Every single developer that builds in Squamish should put money into our community. Whether it is our rec centre, parks, or kids playgrounds. This is where our municipal negotiations fall apart. Squamish needs people in council who know how to negotiate. If you want to build in Squamish then put money into our infrastructure. PERIOD!!!
