Squamish Nation is planning to build an affordable housing project on Government Road.

The four-storey affordable housing project for Squamish Nation members is being planned for Lot 6- Seaichem IR No. 16, located close to The Watershed Grill restaurant in Brackendale.

The proposed site could accommodate 30 units and features a 4-storey modular structure with a mix of studio, one-bedroom an two-bedroom units.

The design and project plans will be refined based on community consultation, funding availability and partnership opportunities.

DIALOG Architects have recently completed concept design for the site and construction could begin as early as 2022, though funding for the project has yet to be secured.

The Government Road site is one among three sites that have been designated for affordable housing by Squamish Nation. The other two are in North Vancouver.

On July 28, approximately 550 Squamish Nation members had cast their ballots in the Affordable Housing Land Designation Referendum, which enabled the Squamish Nation council to move forward on plans to develop the three sites.

“Designating these sites for affordable housing will help the Nation achieve our goal of bringing every Squamish person home within a generation,” the council said. “These developments will create hundreds of new affordable homes in multi-unit dwellings built exclusively for Squamish citizens and provide much-needed equitable and diverse housing options for our members.”
