Squamish municipal election on October 15

The next District of Squamish election will be held on Saturday, October 15, and residents will vote to elect a mayor, six councilors, and two school board trustees.

To vote, a person must be over 18 years of age or older, a Canadian citizen, a resident of British Columbia for at least 6 months immediately before the day of registration. The voter must be a resident of the municipality, and must not be disqualified by law. Residents can visit the Elections BC website to register for the General Municipal Election.

Those who are new to Squamish should update voter information such as their residential or mailing address. Visit the Elections BC website to register to vote.

The District of Squamish is responsible for conducting its own election, with Council appointing a Chief Election Officer to ensure the process is run in accordance with the Local Government Act.

Here are some key dates for voters

Thursday, April 14 – Last day to meet six-month residency requirement before General Voting Day (October 15)

Tuesday, August 22 – Last day to request omission of personal information from voters list

Monday, October 3 – Advance voting opportunity

Wednesday, October 5 – Advance voting opportunity

Thursday, October 6 – Advance voting opportunity

Saturday, October 8 – Advance voting opportunity

Wednesday, October 12 – Advance voting opportunity

Saturday, October 15 – General voting day and declaration of unofficial results

Wednesday, October 19 – Declaration of official results

Here are some key dates for candidates

Tuesday, March 8 – Last day to meet six-month BC residency requirement for candidates submitting nominations on September 9

July 2022 – Nomination packages will be available at the front counter and on the District website, though the date has yet to be determined.

Wednesday, August 30 at 9 a.m. – Nomination period starts

Friday, September 9 at 4 p.m. – Nomination period ends

Friday, September 16 – Last day to withdraw as a candidate

Saturday, September 17 – Election campaign period starts

Saturday, October 15 – General voting day and declaration of unofficial results

Wednesday, October 19 – Declaration for official results

Friday, January 13, 2023 – Deadline to file campaign financing disclosure statements to Elections BC

    Finally, October 15th can’t come soon enough, to get this sorry excuse of a council and mayor out of office. Hope there are honest and not self-serving people who will run in this election. Good luck Squamish!
