Environment Canada has issued a wind warning for West Vancouver Island. Very strong winds and high waves may inundate low-lying shoreline and beaches, and dangerous storm surges are possible.
“An approaching low pressure system will bring very strong west winds of 80 km/h gusting to 100 towards the western Vancouver Island coast beginning late this morning. The direction of the wind will result in unusually high waves crashing onshore this afternoon and evening,” the agency says.
The strong west winds will shift to the northwest at 70 km/h gusting to 90 late this evening and gradually ease overnight. People are being advised to stay well back from the water’s edge and be alert for exceptionally high waves.
“Keep away from large logs on the beach. Water running up on the beach can easily lift or roll logs which can injure someone caught in their path. Damage to buildings, such as to roof shingles and windows, may occur.”
