BC Green candidate for West Vancouver–Sea to Sky Jeremy Valeriote is criticizing a Conservative promise on regional transit, saying the party’s platform does not have the commitment.
In a press release, Valeriote described the promise as a last-minute attempt to win voters on an issue he said he has worked on since being elected.
“The Conservatives are finally talking about transit in the Sea to Sky corridor in the last week of the election period because it’s completely absent from their platform. In fact, their platform is paper-thin on transit across B.C. in general,” he said.
Valeriote also accused other candidates of dismissing the work of the Regional Transit Committee, which he said includes local governments, First Nations councils, and staff from across the corridor. According to the release, Valeriote said the committee’s work to secure a memorandum of understanding has brought the region closer to establishing regional transit.
“They have fought tooth and nail to secure a memorandum of understanding (MOU). It’s odd that an MOU on an oil pipeline can be celebrated as progress in Alberta, while a similar agreement to advance regional transit in Sea to Sky is disparaged,” he said.
Valeriote said BC Transit is tasked with moving the service forward and that those involved remain optimistic about getting buses running.
“This corridor has never been closer to getting the regional transit service it has been promised so many times. Now it’s time to finish the job,” he said.
He said the BC Greens have included their commitment to regional transit in the party’s platform.
