Whistler trail closed due to aggressive bear

staff report
May 2, 2022 10:56am

The Conservation Officer Service (COS) has received a report of an aggressive black bear near the Westside Road entrance of the Millar Creek Valley Trail.

The Millar Creek Valley Trail is closed as a result of this encounter from the North Function Junction entrance (near Gescan) to the entrance at Westside Road to give the bear time and space.

Please remember, to keep dogs on leash when out walking and maintain at least a distance of 100 meters from bears. If do you encounter a bear, you should make your presence known by speaking in a firm, calm voice and slowly backing away from the bear.

The use of bear bells or such, will let a bear in the area know that somebody is approaching and they can move away.

Please report bear sightings by phoning the BC Conservation Officer Service (COS) at 1-877-952-7277. Early reporting allows the COS to assess situations and help keep our community members safe from conflict with wildlife and our bears safe and wild.
