District of Squamish plans to build a pump station in the Whittaker Slough area because of flooding issues. According to a staff report that will be presented to council today, flooding is currently experienced in the Whittaker Slough area, adjacent to the Railway Museum during high river events.
This requires Public Works to mobilize emergency pumps to reduce water levels on a semi-annual basis. Staff is recommending to build a pump station in the area to automatically pump water once a pre-determined water level has been reached.
The recommendation is part of a Howe Sound and Stawamus River Integrated Strom Water Management Plan prepared by the district to guide how storm water is managed in these watersheds.
This storm water management plan also includes a Stormwater Servicing Plan for the Loggers East Neighbourhood Plan area. To mitigate storm water issues, District also plans to implements certain strategies such as capturing and treating storm water where it lands, and reducing run-off from new developments.
In the Loggers East area, District plans to include requirements for new development to include on-site stormwater management to capture, treat and detain stormwater to reduce potential downstream impacts.
In addition, a concept level plan for linear infrastructure (pipes and ditches) has also been prepared for the area including a proposed diversion pipe to alleviate flows from Loggers Creek and Finch Creek adjacent to developed areas during major rainfall events.
