District of Squamish Councillor Armand Hurford has announced his candidacy for Mayor in this October’s general local elections.
A fourth generation resident of the District of Squamish, Hurford’s purpose in seeking the Mayoralty is to foster a new collaboration on council.
Collaboration that focuses the District’s policy and political resources on tackling the pressing issues of affordability, livability, and environmentally sustainable economic growth by leveraging the opportunities associated with Squamish’s geographic location and natural assets.
“The people living in Squamish are facing real economic and livability challenges from historically low vacancy rates to high rent prices, from soaring housing prices to rising interest rates, from the historical lack of investment in municipal facilities to managing tax rates, from long commute distances and soaring gas prices to a heating climate, from the exponential growth of young families to a lack of childcare availability” says Hurford, adding, “each of these challenges is only going to be solved through collaborative effort of not only the whole of council and senior levels of government, but also the entire community. And it is these challenges we must take up as we set our community up for the future.”
Hurford’s time as District Councillor has been characterized by collaboration and focused problem solving, including work on the Community Climate Action Plan and the creation of the Affordable Housing society on which he serves as chair.
Hurford has also been a board member of the Community Forest since its inception in 2019, the first ever partnership between the District of Squamish and the Squamish Nation. In addition to his role as District of Squamish Councillor, Hurford has owned and operated a local business for the past 15 years, is a founding member of SORCA (Squamish Off-Road Cycling Association) and is a life-long volunteer with Squamish Days Loggers Sports.
Councillor Hurford’s campaign will hold its first event on September 4 2022, and details will be posted to his campaign website.
