Heat warning for Squamish as ‘prolonged heat wave’ hits region

staff report
August 12, 2023 9:32am

A heat warning is in effect for Howe Sound as a prolonged heat wave begins to affect the South Coast starting tomorrow. Daytime temperatures will reach near 33 degrees Celsius away from the water, combined with overnight lows near 17 degrees Celsius.

The warning is in effect for Metro Vancouver, Fraser Valley and Howe Sound, from Sunday to Thursday. “A strong ridge of high pressure will bring rising temperatures to the South Coast this weekend. Well above seasonal daytime temperatures combined with elevated overnight temperatures will mean little relief from the heat,” warns the agency.

However, daytime temperatures will be several degrees cooler near the coast due to breezes from off the water. Temperatures are expected to return to more seasonal values by Friday. Watch for the effects of heat illness: swelling, rash, cramps, fainting, heat exhaustion, heat stroke and the worsening of some health conditions.

Heat warnings are issued when very high temperature or humidity conditions are expected to pose an elevated risk of heat illnesses, such as heat stroke or heat exhaustion.
