Special weather statement for Vancouver

staff report
January 11, 2024 8:28am

Environment Canada has issued a special weather statement for Vancouver. It warns of elevated ocean water levels accompanied by significant waves, predicted to exceed the highest astronomical tide.

This warning is also in effect for Metro Vancouver shorelines along the Strait of Georgia, including Stanley Park, University of British Columbia, Kitsilano, Richmond, and Delta. The event is expected to happen from early to mid-morning today.

The elevated water levels could be caused by large waves, storm surges, and seasonably high tides. The agency warns that These factors can produce high water levels on Thursday morning, posing a risk of coastal flooding, especially in low-lying areas. Residents are urged to continue monitoring alerts and forecasts issued by Environment Canada to stay informed about the situation.

In case of severe weather, residents are advised to send an email to BCstorm@ec.gc.ca or tweet reports using #BCStorm. Taking necessary precautions and staying safe during these weather conditions is essential.
