The District of Squamish invites the public to a ‘Public Input Opportunity’ for the proposed floatel at Woodfibre LNG.

The company has applied for a temporary use permit for the floatel, and the public is invited to give its input on April 23, 6 pm, at Brennan Park Recreation Centre.

The temporary use permit will allow for temporary floating worker accommodation, floatel, for three years. The floatel will consist of 652 private rooms with ensuite washrooms, central cooking, dining and recreation facilities. The company says the floatel, the MV Isabelle, will be moored at the Woodfibre Project site, limiting workers’ need to transport to and from the site during their 14-day shift rotations.

Workers will be transported to and from the floatel from the Lower Mainland after their shift.

According to Woodfibre LNG, the floatel will offer a premium live-work environment, including 652 guest rooms with private ensuites, catered dining and lunch areas, an outdoor and sports lounge, meeting rooms and offices, an 8,000-square-foot fitness facility, and laundry rooms.

The floatel is expected to arrive at the Woodfibre LNG project site in 2024 and stay there until 2027.

Know there will be a bunch of nimby’s out there about this. #1 you do not have the accomodations in the area to support the amount of workers. #2 Will alleviate traffic woes that would be caused by the workers living on there instead of commuting everyday.
Overall more benefits than negatives to the area.

It is hard to imagine how this would have any impact on anyone in Squamish. Given the shortage of rental units within the District this seems like a sensible plan. An alternative would be for the company to run a ferry service out of Darrel Bay, which might be of benefit for local businesses.
