“Echoes of Narcissus,” a groundbreaking multidisciplinary performance, combines contemporary dance from Gruff Goat Dance and live music by Blue Dirt Girl + Klame. The show will premiere at the Britannia Mine Museum on September 14, with a second performance scheduled for October 5th at Merville’s Big Yellow Hall.

Gruff Goat Dance, a Pemberton-based troupe, explores themes of feminine empowerment through dynamic movement. The performance draws inspiration from the myth of Narcissus and Echo, portraying dancers as villainous alter egos entangled in alchemical forces.

This captivating narrative unfolds alongside a live, original score performed by Blue Dirt Girl + Klame, a genre-blending indie project featuring vocalist Kathryn Sutherland, bassist Albert Klassen, and electronic producer Josh Klassen. Based out of Courtenay and Vancouver, the trio has crafted a unique soundscape for this collaboration.

Regarding the project, Gruff Goat Dance’s Trish Belsham shares, “The heart and soul of any good collaboration lies in two contrasting styles coming together to create something neither could achieve alone.” This immersive performance reflects a year of creative synergy, uniting artistic communities and disciplines.

Thank you for publishing our event. After one full year of deep examination of this myth and building a movement vocabulary to bring it to fruition, we are beyond excited to launch this story onto stage. The sound score is brilliant as is Kathryn Sutherland’s voice. I refer to her as ‘golden throat’ because her astounding talent is superb.
