District plans realignment of Government Road to address encroachment

The District of Squamish plans to realign Government Road and will spend $100,000 on the project in 2025.

“Government Road currently encroaches on Seaichem Reserve. This project will explore design options to shift the alignment off Squamish Nation Reserve land. The budget will be used for a survey and preliminary design completed by an engineering consultant,” notes the budget documents posted by the District of Squamish.

The next step for the District is to work on a pre-design project to address the Government Road encroachment of Squamish Nation Seaichem Reserve lands. More details can be expected in the next few months.

District also plans to resurface the Mamquam Bridge deck. “The Mamquam Bridge on Government Road serves a high traffic volume as an alternative to Highway 99. A 2023 engineering review identified approximately 80% of the bridge deck as delaminated, and it was recommended that a bridge deck rehabilitation be completed as a short-term priority,” according to the DOS budget documents. “The consulting engineer has warned that delaying the work could add to the rehabilitation cost as additional damage could occur if the deck issues are not addressed in the short term.”

With a budget of $75,000, the District plans to resurface the bridge deck to remove rotten concrete, reduce maintenance and prevent corrosion to extend the life of bridge components underneath the surface. An improved active transportation connection on the east side of the Mamquam River Bridge will also be in the works during the restoration of the bridge deck.

Meanwhile, the Budget 2025 Open House has been rescheduled to Wednesday, November 13, from 6 pm to 8 pm at Brennan Park Recreation Centre.

The District invited the community for an evening of meaningful discussions on the 2025-2029 Draft Financial Plan.”This is your chance to share feedback and discuss whether the 2025-2029 Draft Financial Plan aligns with your community priorities – and if not, what are we missing?”

Council members and key staff from various departments will be present and eager to hear input while the budget is under review. There will also be refreshments and a supervised kids’ table to keep everyone happy.

This ought to be interesting, Government Road currently passes through the Seaichem Reserve. I guess the DOS will want to expropriate property from Hop Creek Farms. I was told by a district employee that the DOS has an easement for Government Road where it passes through the reserve. Is there any legal requirement for anything to be changed?
