A local resident calls for immediate action to address safety issues at a crosswalk on University Boulevard, near Garibaldi Elementary School. Mike Fraser, a long-time resident of Squamish, says the crosswalk on the east side of the bridge poses serious risks to pedestrians, particularly families with young children attending the nearby school.
Fraser identifies two key hazards at the location:
Excessive Speeding: Vehicles, including large commercial trucks, frequently travel above the speed limit, creating unsafe conditions for pedestrians.
Blind Corner: The crosswalk’s placement on a blind corner leaves drivers with limited time to react to crossing pedestrians.
In a letter to District of Squamish, Fraser proposed several measures to improve safety at the site:
Reduced Speed Limit: Lowering the speed limit to 30 km/h between the University and Garibaldi Elementary School.
Advanced Warning System: Installing flashing lights to alert drivers to pedestrian activity at the crosswalk.
Physical Barriers: Adding permanent traffic cones prevents vehicles from encroaching on the bike lane and crosswalk.
“This crosswalk has become a hazard for pedestrians of all ages, from children to seniors,” he wrote. “Without immediate action, our community is at risk of a tragic accident that could devastate many lives. By implementing these measures, we can significantly reduce the risk of accidents and create a safer environment for everyone,” Fraser concluded.

“….witnessed multi fatalities…..” Surely not! Wouldn’t we have heard of these?
Speeding from those coming down The Boulevard from University neighbourhood has been as issue since that road opened – maybe it’s a neighbourhood attitude that needs addressing.
By the way, the school is Garibaldi Highlands Elementary. I believe Garibaldi Elementary is in Vancouver.
