District applies for right-of-way to relocate wastewater outfall in Squamish River

Right of way
Construction is expected to begin this fall.

The District of Squamish has applied for a Statutory Right of Way (SRW) over Crown land to allow for the relocation of its treated wastewater effluent outfall in the Squamish River.

According to the application, the relocation is needed to improve the system’s long-term operational reliability, taking into account the river’s changing morphology. The new outfall will be built along the Squamish River Dike and will include a short in-river pipeline with a diffuser to safely discharge treated water.

Construction will involve extending an on-land pipeline within the dike and building temporary berms in the river to support installation. These berms will be removed once work is completed. The on-land section will use conventional civil construction methods, with additional engineering controls to manage dike stability.

Access to the site will be via the Squamish River Dike Road, a small gravel road with gated access and low traffic volumes. The location was chosen based on geomorphological studies to avoid areas with high sediment erosion or deposition, and to ensure effective effluent dilution and feasible construction conditions.

The District’s application seeks rights to the land under the Land Act for as long as required for the outfall’s operation.
