Nijjar has now joined a growing number of developers who are asking the district to extend their development permits, their dreams of condos and commercial offices postponed.

On Tuesday, Dec. 18, the council also authorized a secondary residence at another location on the same property. The second residence is allowed under RL-2, for which McCargar’s property is zoned.

But even as some business close down, there are others who are taking a leap of faith, and expanding. Some despite the economy; others because of it. And there are yet others who have expanded in the past, confident in the town’s future.

But when an earthquake slightly bigger than the one we experienced few weeks ago gives the building a shakedown, the building might not stand out as boldly as it’s supposed to do.

The last time this proposal circulated, people were cranky. It got to a point where I was fearful of even mentioning GAS’ name.

In an interview with the Squamish Reporter, Mayor Kirkham said he understands the concern with bourgeoning SODC debt, and is as concerned as any other engaged citizen.

Of the roughly 65 times the council met this year, almost 35 times the councilors have ended up behind closed doors.

A local business owner says the district has effectively managed to shut down his business because of his outspoken nature, and because it’s in direct competition with him.
