Two people were killed while another two were transported to hospital with serious injuries in an accident on Highway. 99, approx. five kilometres north of Lions Bay.
The accident, a head-on collission, took place on Saturday, Nov. 23, at approx. 7:35 am. Both the deceased were travelling in a vehicle from the U.S.
According to some news sources, one vehicle lost control in a corner and collided with a truck where the road narrows to one lane in each direction.
The highway is currently closed in both directions for an undetermined length of time.
At this time, no further information can be released regarding the identities of those involved or possible contributing factors to the incident.

Just returned from the lineup heading south. Bodies have been removexd and injured transported to hospital. Reconstruction of the accident will take place when professionals arrive from Mission early this afternoon, and highway is closed until at least 5pm. Where is the ferry system that could be in place when this happens? Speed and not being familiar with the roads contribute to accidents like t his. When will we learn……..

There are two nasty right hand corners (as you head north) just north of Lion’s Bay. I’ll bet it was in one of those two. The first one is the worst, where it seems to get tighter as you go around the corner. I’d really like to see a bit more work done there to make it a lot safer. Even if it’s flashing amber lights and extra warnings to slow down.

So sorry for the families and victims. I think we should allow the police to finish their investigation before rushing to judgment as to the cause. It could have had any number of causes, and out of respect for the families, let’s not speculate.

Why there wasn’t two lanes added in that section, I’ll never understand. It’s a bad corner and speed doesn’t seem to have been a factor. Inexperience on the highway may have caused this tragedy.

I have seen so any accidents along the stretches by Lions Bay, people going through the greenery divide the two lanes, destroying plants and leaving a pile of bark mulch strewn around.
Then there were the two nearly identical accidents where the drivers ended up in the rock filled ditches at the base of the cliff, one ending up on its side leaning on one of the highways signs.
I am reminded of an accident me and another came across one wintery morning while driving up to ski and got passed by a car who crossed the center line to get around us. We came upon him some 10 minutes later, his car rolled several times with him missing his left arm mid upper arm when he was partially ejected from the car. At least his female passenger had the sense to wear her seat belt

Enforcement is needed but one has to consider the number of people using the highway who dont’ have snow tires or have limited experience on this road
