Squamish ‘Biggest Gainer’ in MoneySense Ranking for Best Places to Live in Canada

June 5, 2015 7:41am

Squamish has been ranked 74 out of 209 best places to live in Canada, according to the MoneySense Magazine’s Annual Best Places to Live in Canada ranking.

Compared to last year, Squamish’s overall rank rose by 59 places. It was ranked 133 in 2014.

Squamish is also one among the five cities termed as ‘biggest gainers’ in the 2015 ranking. Squamish joined Barrie, Ont, Kenora, Ont, and Brooks Alberta, and Port Hope, Ont as cities that were the biggest gainers.

MoneySense uses data from Statistics Canada and Environics Analytics to assess cities across 34 categories.

Squamish has come a long way in merely three years. In 2012, the town finished at the bottom of the heap at 182 out of 190 cities surveyed by the magazine.

North Vancouver, West Vancouver, Saanich, Delta, Comox, Port Moody, Port Coquitlam, Vancouver, Victoria, Fort St. John, Richmond, Maple Ridge, Langley, Burnaby, and New Westminster were the only other BC communities ranked higher than Squamish in the 2015 survey.

Access to health care, crime, weather, arts and sports community, affordability, unemployment were some of the indicators Money Sense bases its rankings on.
