American arrested in Squamish for overstay in Canada

November 8, 2018 10:31am

An American citizen was arrested in Squamish— after a car chase— for overstaying in Canada.

On Tuesday, October 30, local police officials noted a vehicle on Cleveland Avenue with US licence plates. The vehicle was ‘known to police’ as the owner had previous run-ins with Squamish RCMP.

The American citizen had also been declared an overstay by Canadian Border Service Agency, police said.

The vehicle failed to stop immediately in downtown Squamish and was made to stop around Shannon Falls on Highway 99.

The male driver was arrested for Fail to Stop as well under the Immigration Act for overstaying in the country.  He was later turned over to CBSA for an assessment for his return to the US.

Halloween a busy night for local police

Squamish RCMP responded to 35 calls for service on October 31st and the early morning hours of November 1, a 25 per cent increase from the previous year.

Calls ranged from Fireworks complaints, to intoxicated persons, a drug impaired investigation, speeding complaints, and suspicious persons calls.

Of the four fireworks complaints, two were for concerns for safety of fireworks and two were for fireworks after hours or setting them off without permits.

Hotel guest arrested for refusing to pay bill

Squamish RCMP arrested a man for fraud and obstruction after he refused to pay his hotel bill and became confrontational with police and staff when asked to leave the room.

On Friday, November 2nd, at 2:30 pm, Squamish RCMP received a call from a local hotel about a guest who refused to pay his hotel bill.

He had locked himself in his room and was refusing to come out. He was eventually coaxed out but then he became confrontational with the staff and police. He was arrested and is scheduled to appear in court in North Vancouver in February 2019.
