Violation ticket issued to man for starting fire

Staff report
May 21, 2020 3:07pm

Squamish RCMP have issued violation tickets to a man for setting off fireworks that caused a fire.

On May 9,  RCMP assisted Coastal Fire near Ashlu Creek after a person lit off a firework that led to a tree catching fire.

The fire was difficult to access, but Coastal Fire adapted to the terrain and was able to contain the fire.

The person who set off the firework faces violation ticket, police said.

Most open burning has been banned in BC since April 16, including Category 2 and 3 open fires, the use of fireworks and sky lanterns and the use of burn barrels or burn cages of any size or description.

The prohibitions apply to all public and private land within British Columbia, unless specified otherwise.

Stolen vehicle recovered

On May 10, RCMP responded to complaint of a stolen truck from the 3800 block of Progress Way.

Investigators notified police in other jurisdictions about the stolen truck. The truck was later located in Whistler, and a suspect has been identified.

Excessive Speed

On May 6, RCMP conducted speed enforcement as part of May’s Speed Awareness Campaign, and did traffic stop with a vehicle travelling an estimated 140 km/h in a posted 80 km/h zone.

RCMP also stopped a motorcycle estimated to be travelling at 150 km/h in a posted 80 km/h zone. RCMP issued both these drivers excessive speeding tickets and the vehicles were impounded for seven days.
