A Squamish Search and Rescue team spent at least six hours on Sunday evening to rescue a father and his nine-year-old son at the intersection of Evacuation Trail and Sea to Summit Trail.
Bj Chute, the search manager for Squamish Search and Rescue, said the man called around 7 pm when he realized they would be unable to make their way out.
A team of 14 search and rescue members assisted them back to safety, with the rescue operation ending at 1 am.
Chute said the father did the right thing and called SAR in time, which enabled SAR to conduct a search operation before it became dark.
The rescue was among three calls Squamish SAR responded to on Sunday.
Squamish Search and Rescue members also helped a family that was lost in Murrin Park. The call came around 6 pm and SAR members attended to guide the family to safety, although they were helped by another group of hikers that led them to the parking lot.
In another rescue, SAR members responded to help an injured mountain biker on the Singletrack Mind trail in Valleycliffe.
The mountain biker had injured her shoulder in a biking accident on the trail.
Chute said SAR was called to assist but the mountain biker was able to walk out of the trail with the assistance of her friends.
Chute said he would advise those seeking adventure in the region to prepare themselves well before they go on a hike or a bike ride.
“We would like people to be well prepared so they can self-rescue and not just depend on the SAR to rescue them,” Chute said.
