Squamish RCMP investigating bitcoin scam

staff report
July 3, 2020 12:11pm

Squamish RCMP are investigating a bitcoin scam in Squamish.

On June 22, a victim was defrauded when an unknown suspect opened a bank account in the victim’s name and the phoned the victim claiming to be a police officer.

The suspect instructed the victim to go to the bit coin machine downtown to withdraw and transfer funds or said the police would issue an arrest warrant for the victim.

The victim reported to police who have followed up and also assured the victim that police do not communicate using coercion or threats.

“We have had several files where the public is receiving phone calls where the caller states they are police and ask for payment via BitCoin or Gift Cards,” said Sgt. Sascha Banks of Squamish RCMP.

“This is a fraudulent call and we will never ask for funds via phone or otherwise.  Please call if you are receiving these calls and have questions or you can report to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre.”
