New stop sign in Valleycliffe

District of Squamish has installed a new stop sign in Valleycliffe for traffic coming from Hospital Hill.

The sign was installed today.

Meanwhile, Guilford Drive has been changed to a free flow of traffic and vehicles are no longer required to stop there.

“Please use extra caution when approaching this intersection and note the traffic pattern change,” district says.

District had considered a roundabout at this intersection, but it was rejected because it would require additional space for construction and would involve building a large retaining wall to build outwards towards the highway.

Due to the challenges and costs associated with construction of this retaining wall, this option was not pursued, district says.

The new stop sign on this intersection is also better suited than a yield sign.

“Due to the major trail connection to Valleycliffe, it’s important that drivers stop to look for pedestrians and cyclists as well as vehicles before proceeding. Yield signs typically result in more rear-end collisions than stop conditions,” district says.

The new traffic changes are part of an intersection improvement project at Clarke and Guilford Drives. The district will also add a missing section of Corridor Trail as part of the project.

Construction in the area is scheduled from August 17 to 28; expect delays and single-lane alternating traffic.

This new highway intersection totally screwed us parents at cultural journeys who do drop offs and pick up for their kids at the school.

I’m am extremely pissed off that our needs were not taken into consideration in the design.

I sat in a district meeting last year discussing the safety concerns of the intersection, and they assured me that plans were in effect to make it work better.

Better for the valley cliff parents sure, but we totally got screwed.
