Daily heat record broken in Squamish

Staff report
September 10, 2020 10:42am

Squamish set a new heat record for daily maximum temperatures on Wednesday, September 9.

The Squamish area set a new record of 31.2 C for the daily maximum temperatures since Environment Canada started keeping records in 1960.

The old record of 29.5 C was set in 2008.

Squamish was among various areas in BC where new heat records were set. In West Vancouver, a new heat record was set at 30.3 C. The old record was 28 C, which was set in 1987.

New daily temperature records were also set in Gibsons, Sechlet and other areas of the province as well.

Meanwhile, the heat warning issued for Howe Sound continues, with daytime maximum temperatures forecast to be 5 to 10 degrees above seasonal today.

Temperatures will peak today with daytime highs that are 5 to 10 degrees Celsius above seasonal for this time of year.

Overnight lows will also be up to 5 degrees warmer than seasonal in some areas.

A smoky skies bulletin also remains in place, as long-range transport of wildfire smoke from the United States impacts air quality levels throughout much of southern BC including the Howe Sound.
