The Squamish River Watershed Society has extended the Spit Road closure to Wednesday, September 30.
This would allow the work to be completed safely as crews work on backfilling the road, compaction, and removal of cofferdams.
“On September 10th and 11th the culvert segments were installed and now the site is being backfilled, compacted, and the road bed is being re-established,” the watershed society said in an update.
“We appreciate the patience from the public as we wrap up this exciting project. We expect to have the road open again starting October 1.”
The work is being completed as part of the Central Estuary Restoration Project, a multi-phased project developed to address the decline of Chinook salmon populations in the Squamish River watershed.
The restoration project by Squamish Watershed Society aims to improve the natural integrity of the estuary and its ecological diversity.
The project will reduce obstructions and provide fish access to over 40 kilometers of ideal fish habitat in the upper section of the watershed.
