The District of Squamish is applying for a provincial grant to enhance wildfire protection in areas that are considered high and extreme for wildfire threat in Squamish.
The $150,000 grant will enable a wildfire risk assessment for Garibaldi Highlands, Valleycliffe, as well as Northridge area.
It will also allow a community chipper program for Paradise Valley and Garibaldi Highlands, and fuel management of Merrill Park, as well as fuel treatment around the airport.
In Garibaldi Highlands and Valleycliffe, there will be two FireSmart workshops for locals, and chipper days will be scheduled with the FireSmart Workshops in Paradise Valley and Garibaldi.
Work on district land around the airport is also on the agenda.
“Treating this unit is recommended to increase safety and functionality of fire suppression efforts, and to increase safe access to the area by firefighters,” according to the report.
A summer wildfire prevention media campaign, a virtual community preparedness day, FireSmart workshops for Paradise Valley and Garibaldi Highlands, and a wildfire preparedness workshop for farms in Paradise Valley are other things district plans to do with this grant.

I wonder why programs like |Chipper Services are not being considered for ALL of Squamish. Some of us in Brackendale treck up to the dump all summer long with loads of tree branch debris etc. at $20 a trip min.
A once a month chipper service would be very welcome and cut back on fire risk.
