The District of Squamish will be paying $714,000 in outstanding dues to RCMP.
The dues were withheld and delayed due to an ongoing dispute between the federal government and the province since 2009, according to a staff report to the council.
However, due to the dispute, the payments on IHIT cost sharing, retirement benefits and other contributions were being withheld by the district since 2013.
According to district spokesperson Christina Moore, the payments were anticipated and had been “saved for” over time, so there was a fund already in place for the amount. There was no additional hit to tax payer, she claimed.
The district currently has a just over $2 million in the Provision for Protective Services which will cover the payment liabilities, leaving $1.3 million in the account.
In the future, the district may be liable to contribute $7,900 towards IHIT salaries, the increase in cost related to police unionization, and Public Safety Master Plan resource recommendations.
Donald Patrick says
Money well spent and even better that it was accounted for and not spent on some rediculous service not required.
Bill says
The RCMP should immediately HALT any and all services to the District Of Squamish. Complete STOP.
Let the vagrants and criminals take over the District Of Squamish and turn it into the DTES.
Shame on the “woke” council that is quickly ruining Squamish and area……turning it into yet another DTES.
