High number of bike thefts in community: Squamish RCMP

staff report
July 7, 2021 11:39am

Squamish RCMP have received a high number of complaints of theft of e-bikes and mountain, gravel, and beach-cruiser bikes this past week.

These thefts happened even though the bikes were secure in some manner such as being locked to something or inside a building.

To prevent further thefts, police are encouraging bike owners to find ways to secure bikes such as utilizing multiple locks and installing an alarm system if possible.

People are also being asked to register their bikes, and to report any suspicious activity.

Thefts from autos

Local neighborhoods continued to be hit by thefts from autos this past week.

Majority of incidents happened during the overnight hours, in areas including Guildford Dr., Highlands Way North, Juniper Cres., MacDonald Pl., Magnolia Cres., Pia Rd., Valley Cliffe, and Westway Ave.

Contents stolen include wallet and contents, keys, a Milwaukee reciprocating saw with initials ‘AM’ etched into the handle, a Milwaukee brushless drill, a Craftsman 315 garage door opener, and gift cards.

Police have arrested a man for multiple offences in relation to a number of these recent files.

All crime seems to be going up and is more violent. Perhaps offering free camping in our back green space of our homes wasn’t the best idea. Inviting so many people to camp for free Just saying.

These thefts have been happening quite frequently over the past few months. I certainly hope the RCMP are able relocate a lot of this stuff.

Lots of pickup trucks (probably stolen) full of bikes (probably stolen) driving south on Sea To Sky to Vancouver….might be an idea to set up checkpoints south of Squamish and start checking out the bikes……
