District to hold pop-up session on marine access tomorrow

staff report
March 10, 2022 12:49pm

The District of Squamish is hosting a pop-up session as part of the Marine Access Review.

The pop up session will be held tomorrow, Friday March 11, from 3 to 5 pm at Xwu’nekw Park, located in the paddle boat shed at Main Street and Loggers Lane in Downtown Squamish.

Locals are invited to drop in to chat and discuss marine access maps with District staff. These sessions will go ahead rain or shine, and social distancing will be in effect. District has been working on a Downtown Marine Access Review to assess community ocean access needs, coordinate marine access areas and infrastructure, and improve ocean access for all marine users.

The downtown core marine access review area includes community water access points and infrastructure within the Mamquam Blind Channel (upper, mid and lower reaches), and Cattermole Slough (East of Third Avenue).

District is also inviting the community to take part in a marine survey, which is open until March 13.

As part of the process, the district wants to hear from community members and visitors to the marine environment, outdoor recreationalists, community organizations, businesses, land owners and marine tenure holders, and commercial and industrial operators.

Government agencies, regulators, and public safety staff as well as marine researchers, educators and citizen scientists are also invited to take part in the survey. The inputs and priorities gathered during this process will help to inform specific recommendations for Council consideration on both short and long-term waterfront and marine planning.

I showed up and waited with one other guy who also came down to participate. No one was there. What happened?
