The River Forecast Centre has issued a High Streamflow Advisory for the Sea to Sky region, from Squamish to Whistler.

The advisory is in effect for Vancouver Island, Sunshine Coast as well as Howe Sound including for Squamish River, Stawamus River, and Mamquam River. A High Streamflow Advisory means that river levels are rising or expected to rise rapidly, but no major flooding is expected. However, the agency cautions that fast-flowing rivers pose a risk to safety and minor flooding in low-lying areas is possible.  A rainfall warning is also in effect for Squamish.

The River Forecast Centre has also issued a flood watch for Englishman River as well as the West Vancouver Island. A Flood Watch means that river levels are rising and will approach or may exceed banks. Flooding of areas adjacent to affected rivers may occur. A Pacific weather system is bringing significant sub-tropical moisture to coastal British Columbia. Rainfall amounts since yesterday have ranged from 70-130 mm on West Vancouver Island, and 40-120 mm on the Sunshine Coast and Howe Sound.

The system is expected to bring heavy rainfall to Howe Sound today though the rain will ease on Thursday. Total rainfall amounts of 180-250 mm are forecast for West Vancouver Island over this period, with lesser amounts (60-120 mm) forecast for Howe Sound.

On-going rises in river levels are expected throughout Wednesday and potentially overnight in areas, and minor localized flooding and road washouts are possible. The River Forecast Centre is monitoring the conditions but cautions to be careful around fast-flowing rivers in the area.
