The District of Squamish has received a Spill Notice from BC Hydro, indicating that a spill of 170-200 cubic meters of water will be released starting at 1 pm today from the Cheakamus Dam.
This controlled release is a routine operation for BC Hydro to manage reservoir levels. Although no flooding is expected, the rivers may rise to the tops of their banks due to the release.
Due to the rapid water level increase during the following 24 hours of the release, it is recommended that people keep their distance from unstable riverbanks and stay off the rivers and waterways for the next 24 hours. The spill release is expected to be completed within a day, and BC Hydro officials are closely monitoring the situation. Residents are advised to remain vigilant and stay updated with the news for any further developments.
BC Hydro usually issues a “Flood Alert” notification in case of overbank flooding. Residents experiencing flooding are asked to contact Municipal Hall at 604-892-5217 or the 24-hour emergency line outside of business hours at 604-815-4040.
