District working on designs for new pool, second ice rink

The District of Squamish is working on plans for a new pool and an ice rink as part of its five-year budget.

“Placeholders are in the Financial Plan for the design of a new pool in 2027 and design of a second ice rink in 2028,” said Fiona Rayher, a district employee. She was responding to a question by a citizen on the district’s budget feedback page.

“Getting these projects in the 5-Year plan is an important first step, but securing grant funding for these projects still needs to be confirmed. We are committed to developing plans for both projects to be ready to apply for grant or partnership funding when able.”

The new pool will support increased demand at Brennan Park and will feature an eight-lane, 25-meter design. Similarly, a second ice rink has been flagged as a priority by community members, with Rayher acknowledging “the desire and need for a second sheet of ice.”

However, Rayher cautioned that funding for these projects competes with other pressing needs in Squamish’s 10-year capital plan. “The District is faced with many priorities,” she said, noting that critical infrastructure, flood protection, and expanding landfill capacity are among the projects vying for funding.

Funds will also be needed for a future municipal hall as the current one is small and at the end of its life. The budget also allocates funds toward debt servicing for two new fire halls and a Public Works facility, which are essential for maintaining core services.

However, she added that recreation centres are ‘great candidates’ for grant funding and the district plans to pursue grants to move these projects forward. It is also committed to planning for a new rink to be ready to take advantage of funding when able.
