staff report
January 29, 2025 3:14pm

A 21-year-old Squamish man has been charged with multiple criminal offences in connection to a December shooting in Surrey that left two people seriously injured.

Gagandeep Singh Bakshi was arrested on January 15 following an investigation by the Surrey RCMP’s Provincial Operations Support Unit (SPOSU). The BC Prosecution Service has since charged him with attempted murder, aggravated assault, discharging a firearm with intent, and two counts of assault with a weapon.

The charges stem from a December 16, 2024, incident in Newton, where officers responded to reports of a shooting in the 12600 block of 67B Avenue. According to police, a woman called 911 after she and her husband were shot while outside. A young child was inside a nearby vehicle but was not harmed. Both victims were transported to the hospital with serious injuries.

Search warrants were executed at homes in Squamish, Delta, and Surrey between January 16 and 17, with assistance from the Sea to Sky RCMP, Delta Police Department, SPS, and the Integrated Emergency Response Team (IERT). Bakshi remains in custody and is scheduled to appear in Surrey Provincial Court on February 10, 2025.

The case is one of the first significant investigations since the SPS became Surrey’s official police of jurisdiction on November 29, 2024.
