The District of Squamish Council will review a development permit for a new two storey mixed-use building at 40340 Tantalus Rd, at a council meeting on March, 3. The proposed development is on the former site of the Tantalus Mall, which was destroyed by a fire in 2022.

District staff recommend in a report to council, that they approve the development permit, which includes several zoning variances. The building would host eight rental apartments on the second floor and 258 square metres of ground-floor commercial space.

The rental units would consist of six one-bedroom-plus-flex apartments and two studios, all with recessed balconies. According to the report, the eight rental units would contribute between 1.1 and 2.5 per cent of the District’s projected annual housing targets.

The ground floor would be divided into four retail spaces intended to support neighbourhood-serving businesses.

To move forward, the applicant is seeking variances to increase maximum lot coverage from 50 per cent to 62 per cent, reduce front and side setbacks, and lower required parking from 18 spaces to 14.

Staff say the reduced parking is supportable given the building’s small size, proximity to transit, daily services and schools, and district policies aimed at encouraging alternative transportation.

The District of Squamish hasn’t received any public comments on the proposed development.

Do not reduce parking spaces. I find it difficult to park in this area to begin with
