Heavy rain is expected across the North Shore and Howe Sound on Friday, with rainfall totals potentially reaching 80 millimetres at higher elevations.
An Environment Canada alert says a potent low-pressure system will bring rain beginning after midnight Thursday and continuing through Friday before tapering off in the evening.
Higher-elevation communities in North and West Vancouver, along with communities near southern Howe Sound, could receive up to 80 mm. Lower elevations and northeastern Metro Vancouver, including Coquitlam, can expect closer to 50 mm.
The system is the first in a series of wet and windy storms expected to affect the region.
Environment Canada warns that water will likely pool on roads and in low-lying areas, while visibility could suddenly deteriorate. Some property damage is possible.
Residents are advised to clear fallen leaves from storm drains to help reduce the risk of property damage and watch for washouts near rivers, creeks and culverts.
The agency rates the expected impact as moderate and its forecast confidence as high.
