Squamish RCMP are investigating a violent early-morning incident at the downtown encampment that involved a discharged shotgun and bear spray deployed on sleeping occupants.
At around 4:40 a.m. Tuesday, officers responded to multiple 911 calls reporting a possible shooting in the 37000-block of Third Avenue. Upon arrival, they found several people suffering from bear spray exposure. BC Emergency Health Services treated those affected at the scene, and no serious injuries were reported.
Investigators determined that bear spray had been sprayed into a tent occupied by three people, and a shotgun was fired during the incident. A group of individuals believed to be responsible fled before police arrived.
The Sea to Sky RCMP General Investigation Section has taken over the investigation and is processing the scene, which has been secured. Police are asking the public to avoid the area throughout the day.
Despite being in its early stages, investigators believe the attack was targeted.
“We understand incidents like this can be concerning, particularly when they occur in locations that have seen previous police activity,” said Staff Sergeant Sascha Banks, Operations Commander of the Squamish RCMP. “Our officers are actively investigating this matter and continue to conduct proactive patrols in the area.”
Anyone with information, dashcam footage, or video from the area is asked to contact Squamish RCMP at 604-892-6100.
