The Squamish area had more illegal campfire tickets than any other area identified by the BC Conservation Officer Service this summer, with officers issuing 32 tickets worth a total of $36,800.
In a public update, the service called the Squamish area the “hot spot” for illegal campfires. Each ticket carried a $1,150 fine.
Across B.C., conservation officers working weekend patrols with the BC Wildfire Service issued 98 tickets under the Wildfire Act between July 1 and September 9, worth a combined $112,700. The majority were issued in the South Coast region, which includes the Sea-to-Sky corridor and the Lower Mainland.
The figures describe tickets issued, not fines collected.
The Conservation Officer Service said wildfire season continues and urged the public to remain vigilant.
